A customer came in having caught a high spot in the road hard enough to crack an aftermarket front bumper and splitter. Two complications: the parts were fiberglass rather than the usual flexible plastic, and the car was pearl white.

Both of those are the hard version of this job, and it went back out looking better than new. Worth explaining why they are hard.

Fiberglass is not plastic

A factory bumper cover flexes, so it takes a flexible primer and additive in the paint. Fiberglass does not flex, cracks rather than deforms, and needs its own repair method and a rigid substrate system. Spray a flex product over fiberglass or a rigid one over a plastic cover and the finish fails, usually within a year.

Pearl white is the difficult color

Whites look simple and are the opposite. A pearl carries a mica layer whose thickness changes the final appearance, so matching means matching the number of coats and the film build, not just the formula. Two auto body shops can mix identical paint and produce visibly different panels. It has to be sprayed out, evaluated against the vehicle, and adjusted.

The general process

Factory code as a starting point, then tinting to the vehicle as it actually is today after years of Illinois sun and salt. Test cards checked in daylight. Color blended into the adjacent panels, clear carried to a natural break so the eye finds no edge anywhere.
